As reported by the Associated Press (AP), researchers are having difficulty finding participants to volunteer for a study related to cancer risks associated with erionite, a mineral said to be used and contained in gravel on roads throughout western North Dakota. As noted by the AP, North Dakota health officials and the Environmental Protection Agency are seeking to perform testing on 50 individuals in the area who may have been exposed. They so far have less than 10 people willing to participate. Mark Dihle with the state’s health department is quoted in the report as stating, “We haven't had quite the response we're looking for.” The deadline for signing up to participate has been extended to June 12, and those who volunteer will be paid $100.
