February 23, 2009 (FinancialWire) -- The U.S. Army has awarded Raytheon Co. (NYSE: RTN) $173 million to provide second-generation infrared kits for a variety of combat systems.

The firm fixed price award modifies an existing contract and provides an additional 6,153 Horizontal Technology Integration Second Generation-Forward Looking Infrared Block 1 A/B-Kits.

SG-FLIR is a core infrared sensor supporting fire control and surveillance on several U.S. Army ground combat systems, according to Raytheon. The award also includes foreign military sales to Iraqi and Egyptian forces to provide thermal receiver upgrades for M1 Abrams tanks.

Waltham, Massachusetts-based Raytheon specializes in defense, homeland security and other government markets. The company provides electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing, effects, and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a range of mission support services.

Raytheon employs 73,000 people worldwide.
