Asbestos To Be Removed At Oswego, NY High School

Crews will be removing asbestos from the Oswego, New York high school during the upcoming February break, according to David Butts of Christa Construction, the company that will be handling asbestos abatement.

“We will be doing asbestos removal in the cafeteria,” Butts confirmed. Signs notifying students and staff of the upcoming project must be posted ten days prior to when the project actually begins, and Butts will be at the high school this week to put the signs in place.

Abatement will begin on February 13th at the conclusion of the school day. The cafeteria will be asbestos-free and ready for students when they return to school after break.

Typically, asbestos removal in school buildings is conducted when students and faculty are out of the building for breaks to avoid exposing them to potentially harmful airborne asbestos, which may cause the development of asbestosis or mesothelioma cancer.

The Oswego County Today website posted a news story today to further inform parents, students and faculty of the upcoming abatement at the high school. In 2005, asbestos floor tiles were removed from the high school science labs at a cost of $13,400. Asbestos abatement in the science labs was conducted over the summer break.
