Ohio Recycling Center Now Accepts Asbestos Materials
Ohio’s first permanent household hazardous waste disposal facility has re-opened for another recycling season.
Located at 1201 Graham Road in Stow, the Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center reopened April 1. The center will be accepting items through Sept. 30.
The facility first opened for recycling in 1996. Since then the center has collected tons of hazardous household materials.
In 2008 alone, the center collected 929,461 pounds of hazardous waste, 160,304 pounds of computers, and 70,864 pounds of television parts according to Yolanda Walker, executive director of the Summit/Akron Solid Waste Management Authority..
The center does not accept business, school or other non-residential waste.
Ms. Walker believes that the center is of great benefit to the community, saying: “It diverts from our waterways and landfills, household chemicals that can damage and hurt our water supplies.”
Items accepted without charge at the seasonal recycling center include automotive products, batteries, paints, and electronics.
Some hazardous materials require special attention. Items containing mercury must be placed in a sealed plastic bag and then placed in a rigid container before bringing them to the center.
The center will even accept asbestos, if it has been properly contained. Asbestos products must be wetted (saturated with water to prevent dust), double bagged, and sealed. They must also measure less than 3 feet long. These precautions must be taken to ensure that no accidental release of asbestos occurs. Asbestos fibers can damage a the health of anyone who inhales them. The fibers work into the soft tissues of the body, and can lead to mesothelioma, a rare form for cancer.
Asbestos is found most frequently in the tiles and insulation of older buildings, but was also used in floor and ceiling tiles, roofing tiles, drywall, acoustical plaster, stucco, and even certain brands of duct tape.
Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Center hours of operation are Tuesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. For more information and a complete list of acceptable items, visit www.saswma.org or call 330-374-0383.
