POULSBO, Wash. -- December 2, 2008 -- The adventure and science-fiction novel Site 39: Blue Orb by Otis V. Goodwin, III is a follow-up to his first book, Ethan: Site 39, which Goodwin says he created due to reader demand.
The fictional Site 39: Blue Orb story line is set in the 22nd century around a cast of characters called on to carry out a mission in the center of the Milky Way Galaxy after an asteroid destroyed nearly all of Earth’s civilization – and before history repeats itself 5,000 years later.
But in reality, the underlying threat the impact of an asteroid could have on our planet today, says Goodwin, is “seriously on the minds of scientist and government personnel…the parallel between the Site 39 series story line and my life is experiencing things and events during my adult career in military missile and space programs of the United States that I could only imagine as a youngster.”
Goodwin targeted the Site 39 series towards young adults and seniors because beyond his brave team of adventurers mastering “The Menace” that wreaks havoc throughout the galaxy, he says the books demonstrate the tenacity and basic goodness inherent in humanity. “A modern sci-fi novel does not require evil characters, blood, gore and near-explicit sex to be enjoyed,” he says. “Ordinary – or nearly so – people leading ordinary lives can find themselves doing extraordinary things and come through it all without losing their essential humanity. Life is a continuum that, if carefully cherished, can extend forever.”
The characters of Site 39 will continue beyond Site 39: Blue Orb, as Goodwin currently has more stories in the works.
