Devastated by rejection, Patulous seeks solace in another neighborhood and overcomes feelings of sadness and inferiority by making friends with Sammy the snail, Lily the ladybug and Gabriella the grasshopper. When the time comes to make the transformation into a butterfly, Patulous returns home and is again rejected by the other caterpillars, but with the support of Sammy, Lily and Gabriella, Patulous molts into a chrysalis and ultimately emerges the most beautiful butterfly of all.
