MARIE, Ontario -- December 9, 2008 -- In Love and Do What You Want…According to Jesus, first-time author John Maccarone makes the controversial case that organized religion is rooted in hypocrisy. It aims to encourage would-be followers of Jesus to focus on his message of love, not the rules and boundaries imposed by others in his name.
Using examples from biblical texts and the author’s own life, the book seeks to contend that judging one’s neighbor in any way is morally and spiritually flawed. In contrast, Maccarone asserts, loving one’s neighbor, regardless of race, religion or creed, is the purest expression of good. “Love is the only way we can arrive at total personal fulfillment,” Maccarone explains. “Any thought, word or deed that does not make us more loving, kind and compassionate is the one and only sin.”
A trained theologian and former Catholic priest, Maccarone turned away from his faith after considering many of the issues that he reveals in his book. After the priesthood, he spent more than 20 years with a department of social services working with people who were hurting and in need. According to Maccarone, the expression of love itself offers salvation, not the observance of any religion’s rules and principles.

About the Author
John Maccarone earned an ecclesiastical degree in philosophy from St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto and a theological degree from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa. Ordained a Roman Catholic priest, he served the church in the Dominican Republic and his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Maccarone left the priesthood in 1975 to work with the Department of Social and Family Services in Sault Ste. Marie, eventually becoming the city’s commissioner of social services. Now retired, he focuses exclusively on religious and spiritual learning.
