March 11, 2009 (FinancialWire) -- Verizon Communications' (NYSE: VZ) Verizon Business unit will provide network and data services at U.S. Department of Defense installations around the world under a new contract awarded by the Defense Information Systems Agency.

Under the contract, called Defense Information System Network Transmission Services - Pacific II, Verizon Business will provide telecommunications services at military installations and other government sites located in the Asia-Pacific region, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America and South America, the Middle East and the United States.

The contract term is ten years, if all options are exercised, and has a maximum value of $2.5 billion.

Verizon Business will provide services ranging from individual circuits to fully managed transmission services, for bandwidth ranging from 64 Kbps to 10G wavelength over fiber or satellite, or both. Verizon Business will also provide managed data services including Internet protocol, Ethernet and Internet services.

The DTS-P II network, which is part of the Defense Information System Network, supports many aspects of the military operations around the globe and other authorized Defense Department requirements.

Verizon Business previously had provided the network services under a predecessor contract, the Defense Information System Network Transmission Services - Pacific.
