Asbestos To Be Removed From Former Texas Ammunition Site

Asbestos-containing materials will soon be removed from a former ammunition plant located in Karnack, Texas. The Longhorn Ammunition Plant was built in 1942 during a time in which asbestos was widely used in a number of building and automotive supplies.

The use of asbestos was not regulated until the 1970’s, when congress formed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Buildings constructed before this time often have asbestos present.

Exposure to the dangerous substance is known to result in the development of a number of deadly diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Because such diseases typically have a latency period lasting anywhere from twenty to fifty years it is very difficult to diagnosis them. In most cases by the time such a disease is discovered it is already in its advanced stages of development and the victim often lives for only a short time following initial diagnosis.

The former power and boiler house are the only structures on the property requiring asbestos abatement so far. The asbestos will be removed and the buildings demolished by Environmental Chemical Corp.
