Georgia Dome Renovation a Success

Georgia Dome Renovation a Success

Gainesville, Georgia - August 6, 2008 - Completed in 1992, the 16 year old Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta is the home venue for the Atlanta Falcons and the recent host of two Super Bowls, the Olympic Games, and numerous concerts. Among the several planned improvements at the Dome was the need for both new seating and color themes. When Georgia Powder Coating was approached with Arthur Blank's (owner of the Falclowns) and the Dome's challenge to powder-coat and assemble some 80,000+ both new and refurbished seats for the Georgia Dome, Dallas Cooley, V.P. of sales at GPC, was eager to accept the challenge.

Cooley said, "When Georgia Powder Coating was approached with the project we knew we could handle a job of that caliber. The overall size of the job is not uncommon for us. We are re-powder coating about 33,000 refurbished seats from the upper and mezzanine levels, we will also be powder coating and assembling the roughly 38,000 new seats that will go on the lower level." The time line was the challenge: the first production run started in February of this year. The seats are installed as each production run is finalized because of scheduled events at the Dome, and the job will be completed prior to the Falcons first pre-season game August 9th. According to Cooley, it is the equivalent to powder-coating a minor-league ballpark every week.

Georgia Powder Coating is proud of their commitment to "going green." Powder coating creates very little volatile organic compound emissions compared to those of conventional liquid paint. In addition, more than one million pounds of the plastic used from the old teal seating at the Dome and 225 thousand pounds of aluminum will be recycled from the project.

Georgia Powder Coating was started in the back of a poultry-processing warehouse. With only two employees, who continue to work at Georgia Powder Coating today, the conveyor line had to be stopped to answer the telephone. When work was slow, they made paint hooks from clothes hangers. As the workload grew beyond what the small staff could handle, they would drive around in search of extra workers.

Georgia Powder Coating has come a long way since those days in the warehouse and they now occupy there own facility on Zander Drive in Gainesville. They have an automatic-gun conveyor line for large quantity coating production and have a batch operation for coating individual orders. The staff has grown as well, to over 30 employees.

Completing a project such as this is important and exciting for all at Georgia Powder Coating, and we take pride in bringing the success of its completion before the season starts.
