WASHINGTON, September 27 - Although the dollar is weakening, Indian car maker Tata Motors will still be rolling out its ultra-economy car in 2008- which initially was planned to be priced at around $2,500. The Rupee has appreciated over 11% this year, but the auto maker is still on track for its debut cheap car.
Asian car producers are enjoying fat years in North America. Japan's three largest auto makers- Toyota, Honda and Nissan- all reported increased sales last month despite the sagging dollar. The first two carmakers also have their successful hybrid models to thank for Americans' return business.
Malaysia is also trying to get in on the lucrative export market and today raised its expectations for automobile exports to Asia. The "Proton" has had some initial success in these markets, and manufacturers are hoping to enter the Indian market and win some market share from the Japanese in Thailand.
Hyundai will be entering the hybrid market with its first model in 2012. The company's "I-blue" model was shown at this year's Frankfurt Car show, and it will compete with successful models being produced by Japanese rival Toyota.
