Lockheed Martin Division Enlists Fluid Innovation Group to Market Internally Developed Software
AUSTIN, Texas -- Fluid Innovation Group (FIG), a company that works with other enterprises and institutions to transform their internally developed software into commercial products, announced today that it had completed a software commercialization agreement with a division of Lockheed Martin, Inc.
As part of the agreement, FIG matched the proprietary software of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, an $11 billion division of the defense contractor, with an independent software vendor.
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics' software facilitates the electronic distribution of up-to-date technical manuals to maintenance crews around the world. One of the intrinsic features of the publisher/viewer is the ability to instantly update or make changes to the manuals.
In 2006, the company made a decision to streamline its operations and turned to FIG to help identify opportunities to transform its publisher/viewer into a commercial product that would not only allow its engineers to focus on core activities, but also generate revenue for Lockheed.
"We develop a lot of great programs internally, but we wanted to stop expending internal resources to create them," says John McGowan, Associate General Counsel of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. "We'd rather have our engineers working on our core products. Fluid Innovation Group really helped us find a great relationship that would allow us to redirect our internal resources and create a new income stream."
FIG found an appropriate match for the software in Jouve Aviation Solutions.
"The software gives us a capability in defense that we didn't have before," said Terry McNicholas, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at Jouve. "The Lockheed solution was exceptionally well designed and well developed. It is a natural fit for our product suite."
Chris McKinzie, Chief Executive Officer of FIG, noted that his company's business model "creates financial benefits for both parties in that companies realize revenue and increase the return on their IT investments by productizing their intellectual assets, while vendors can deploy battle-tested software with little to no ramp-up time."
Jouve is already benefiting from the arrangement, with the publisher/viewer being used by the air force of the United Arab Emirates. It will also be rolled out to the Polish Air Force in mid-2007.
