Development Education Projects at Taste the World Festival 2006
The 2006 Taste the World Festival will be held on the 9th December in St James' Cavalier, Valletta. The event is organized by Koperattiva Kummerc Gust (KKG) and this years' theme will be the unfair practices existing in the textile industry. The Festival will run from 10 am to 10 pm, and a number of stalls will sell a great variety of products produced in different countries and will provide information on the event's subjects.
The Forum for Justice and Cooperation, a network of 4 Maltese NGOs (Inizjamed, KKG, Kopin and the Third World Group), will be present at the event to promote its ongoing projects about development education (active global citizenship) in order to involve a wider public in these initiatives. The Forum is now engaged through its organizations in the implementation of four projects with the aim to raise awareness of development issues.
One of these projects is "Playing Fair", KKG's attempt to promote quality education in order to improve motivation, behaviour and achievement across the formal educational sector. KKG works with schools, other civil society organizations and members of the public to promote actions that favour sustainable development and raise awareness of international issues. Fair trade and the interdependence between developed and developing countries are two of main aspects.
Another project is "Global Action Schools", a partnership of seven organizations working with schools across Malta, Austria, Czech Republic, England, Poland, Slovak Republic and Thailand, locally coordinated by Kopin (Kooperazzjoni Internazzjonali - Malta). The aim of this project is to promote global issues such as children's rights, climate change and fairer trade; to make students understand how small changes in their lives could help reduce global poverty, and to enable them to link with other schools around the world in order to try to find common solutions to the world's biggest challenges.
The third project is "Conectando Mundos", an effort to create an alternative space where students from different regions in the world, with different cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, can participate in joint activities and share their experiences. The local partner of the project is Inizjamed. This is the fourth edition of the project and this year it will focus on the access to water as a prerequisite for the respect of human rights. The aim is to make students aware of the inequalities of access to clean water and of the more general causes that prevent a lot of people from satisfying their basic needs; to make the public understand the causes of poverty; and to encourage lifestyles that are sensitive to a sustainable use of the world's resources.
The fourth project is "Bulding Unity Through Diversity", a communication campaign to promote diversity as a factor of development, locally coordinated by Kopin. The project aims to promote new approaches to development cooperation based on the idea of reciprocity and mutual understanding, in a perspective in which the development process is seen as the result of the dialogue. The project's main entry point was the '1000 Families' exhibition held in September and October. Kopin is organizing seminars and training for teachers on how to implement educational activities, and has visited schools as part of Global Education Week. It also plans to tour further schools as from March 2007.
