PUC Evaluates Proposals from Regulated Utilities Aimed at Supporting Economic Recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic
St. Paul, Minnesota — The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) continues to investigate the utility-related impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Minnesotans and how utilities can support the state’s economic recovery efforts — an initiative that was launched in May 2020. During its February 11 regular agenda meeting, the Commission accepted reports submitted by the regulated electric and gas utilities outlining investments assisting in Minnesota’s economic recovery while providing utility system benefits. Additionally, to advance diversity goals, accelerate employment, and mitigate rate impacts, in addition to other economic goals, the Commission directed the development of a reporting structure to evaluate proposals submitted by the regulated utilities.
Commissioner Sieben said, “In the spring, as the COVID-19 pandemic led to a dramatic downturn in the economy, the Commission asked the regulated utilities to consider advancing planned projects. We appreciate the serious proposals many of the regulated utilities put forth, and the comments from interested parties on how the Commission should consider and track these investments. The Commission will continue to adhere to our fundamental role: to carefully weigh whether these projects advance the public interest in ensuring Minnesotans have access to reliable, affordable and clean power.”
Commissioner Sullivan said, “As utilities consider investments providing system benefits, access to conservation, and clean energy to aid in Minnesota’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission will evaluate each suggested proposal following our regulatory mission to ensure safe, adequate, and efficient utility services at fair and reasonable rates.”
