Philadelphia – February 5, 2021 – State Senator Art Haywood (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) will meet with Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) presidents starting next week to address incidents of racial discrimination and harassment on PA college campuses.
“African American students have six demands and we demand action,” Haywood said. “Racial slurs, threats, and intimidation are unacceptable. We must end campus racism now.”
Student demands include ending racial harassment and speech, nurturing and retaining students of color, organizing an incident reporting system, unveiling mandatory diversity training, generating more mental health resources, and hiring more faculty and staff of color.
“My ideal outcome is that we are able to come to an understanding of making our students of color feel safe,” said Naschia N. Brice-Blackwell, criminal justice major at Shippensburg University.
From Feb. 8-11, Sen. Haywood and African American students will attend virtual meetings with President Laurie A. Carter, J.D. of Shippensburg University, President Michael A. Driscoll of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Interim President Kenneth Long, M.B.A. of East Stroudsburg University, and President Bashar W. Hanna, Ph.D. of Bloomsburg University to fix six university-wide policies.
