STATE ADVISES HOMEOWNERS TO REVIEW INSURANCE POLICIES FOR HURRICANE AND FLOOD COVERAGE
HONOLULU – As Hurricane Douglas, the first major storm to threaten Hawaii this tropical cyclone season, approaches the islands, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division reminds residents to review their insurance policies and understand their coverage.
“While ensuring proper preparedness with an emergency disaster kit and plan readied should be the priority for our residents, we also want to encourage everyone to know what their insurance covers in the unfortunate event of loss or damage to property,” said Insurance Commissioner Colin Hayashida. “Standard homeowner and renter policies do not cover hurricane and flood damage. In addition, hurricane insurance coverage typically excludes water damage even if brought on by a hurricane, highlighting the importance of considering flood insurance.”
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration previously forecasted a near or below normal hurricane season for the Central Pacific this year, but stressed it only takes one to cause significant damage. As everyone remains hopeful that Hawaii escapes unscathed by Hurricane Douglas, residents are reminded that the hurricane season runs through November. It is also important to note that severe flooding can occur year-round and in areas outside of designated flood zones as experienced in April 2018.
Various consumer information guides, including “My Insurance Doesn’t Cover What?” and tips for storm claims, are available online at https://cca.hawaii.gov/ins/resources/ to assist residents better prepare for an emergency.
The Insurance Division also encourages residents to update their home inventory of belongings for the purpose of property damage claims. Individuals with specific questions about their polices should call the agent and/or insurance company issuing their policy.
