Covid-19: Preventive measures in prisons reinforced

Ndalatando, ANGOLA, July 3 - With a view to preventing covid-19, the various organs of the administration of justice in the northern Cuanza Norte Province adopted the measure of placing, in institutional quarantine of 14 days, all citizens under pre-trial detention.,

The Deputy-Attorney of the Republic in Cuanza Norte Province, Maria Joaquina Matias Pedro, who provided the information to ANGOP last Thursday, explained that the citizens subject to the prison observe a period of quarantine in the jails/cells of the future facilities of the Criminal Investigation Services (SIC) or in a restricted area created for that purpose in the main prison unit in the province.

She said that the measure results from the strategies of the local justice bodies aimed at the immediate identification of detainees with suspected symptoms of Covid-19, in order to take steps to prevent the spread of the disease within the criminal population.

Although the province did not register cases of excessive preventive detention, the prosecutor acknowledged that there was an overcrowding in the county prison unit, which currently has a penal population of 464 prisoners, against 250 of its installed capacity, of which 280 were convicted and 184 detained.

In the context of preventing Covid-19 and reducing overcrowding in prisons, Maria Joaquina Matias said that, from January to May of this year, the Attorney-General Office (PGR) in Cuanza Norte assessed several criminal cases and granted provisional release to 749 inmates, 482 of which during the State of emergency and public calamity (still in force).

On the other hand, she informed that the PGR in the province should get until the end of the year four more prosecutors, to be added to the current 17 magistrates of the sector, along with the expansion of services to the municipalities of Lucala and Samba-Cajú.
