W.Va. State Fire Marshals charge Harrison Co. man

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office announces arson charges filed against a man in connection with a fire set to a residence in April.

Howard Nelson “Bubby” Merritt, 49, of the Shinnston area is charged with first-degree arson and burglary. Investigators believe Merritt set a fire that severely damaged a home on Cunningham Run Road on April 24, 2019.

Investigation of the fire scene revealed the fire was incendiary in nature.

Merritt, who was already in the North Central Regional Jail on unrelated charges, was charged with the arson fire on July 8.

This arrest resulted from a combined effort by WVSFMO investigator R.C. Ayersman and detectives from the Harrison Co. Sheriff’s Department.
