Hoyer Statement in Opposition to President Trump’s Attempt to Fund an Ineffective Border Wall At the Expense of Our Troops

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Department of Defense’s intent to abuse reprogramming to pay for the President’s costly, ineffective border wall:

"After President Trump failed to secure funding from Congress for his expensive and ineffective border wall, he declared that he intends to subvert the will of Congress and the American people and take funds away from our military and other defense priorities to pay for it.  Now we know what he is willing to sacrifice to build his wall: funding for critical equipment supporting our troops in the field and funding to help our Afghan allies prevent the Taliban from returning to power.  This is an egregious and ill-conceived usurpation of Congress's constitutional authority to determine how the American taxpayers' money is spent, and it is a dangerous abandonment of our men and women in uniform.

“It is shameful that House Republicans blocked an effort to override the President's veto in March of a resolution reasserting Congress’s authority, essentially giving him a green light to undermine Congress's power of the purse. House Democrats, led by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith, will stand up to this abuse of reprogramming funds, and I urge House Republicans to join us in order to protect our troops and allies.”
