“Steve and Dara’s technology expertise and current list of clients overlap perfectly with the firm’s strategic priorities and will complement our core IP practice and transportation and technology initiatives,” said Kenny Steinthal, leader of King & Spalding’s Intellectual Property practice. “Beyond their professional reputation for doing exceptional work, our IP team has known Steve and Dara for many years personally; they are great lawyers and people, and we could not be more excited to welcome them as partners to the firm.”

“The K&S D.C. office has continued to invest in impressive talent to help counsel our IP clients through their most difficult legal and technology challenges, whether in commercial disputes nationwide or during regulatory interactions with IP agencies here in D.C.,” said Mark Jensen, managing partner of the D.C. office. “The combination of Steve and Dara’s IP experience and entrepreneurial energy makes them a great fit with the rest of the office and firm.”

Stephen Baskin
The former IP practice leader for the Washington, D.C., office of an AmLaw 20 firm, Baskin has been litigating IP cases for over two decades as a first-chair trial lawyer representing technology, financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications and consumer products companies. He has litigated disputes over electrical, computer software, mechanical and business-method patents, as well as licensing and trade secrets. Baskin also provides counsel on pre-litigation matters and analyzes patents and related technology in either defending allegations or conducting due diligence in potential offensive actions. He is currently advising clients in several such matters, including the use of RFID and related technology and the review of certain mechanical features in centrifugal industrial pumps. Baskin received his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Ohio University.

Dara Kurlancheek
Kurlancheek’s practice focuses on complex patent litigation. She has participated in jury trials, claim construction hearings, and is experienced in managing pretrial discovery. Kurlancheek has technical and legal experience across a wide range of technologies and industries, including electronic banking, customer service and payment acceptance technologies, video analytics, complex computer systems and software and customer live-chat website features. She also has handled arbitrations and mediations on patent licensing, software service contract disputes and breach of contract claims. Kurlancheek earned her law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center and her undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University.

“We have been admiring King & Spalding’s growth trajectory and the firm’s commitment to its IP practice nationally and especially in D.C.,” said Baskin. “Seeing the addition of several lawyers that we have known and respected for years, combined with the long-term growth opportunities afforded by the platform, we knew it was the right time to join King & Spalding.”

Five new partners have joined King & Spalding’s Washington, D.C., office alone since the beginning of the year. They include Baskin and Kurlancheek, as well as Joel McElvain (healthcare), Alan Noskow (corporate) and Chris Campbell (intellectual property).
