Arms Control and International Security: Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs Marik String Travels to Japan and Indonesia

Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs Marik String will travel to Tokyo, Japan and Jakarta, Indonesia May 5-10, 2019.

In Tokyo, DAS String will represent the State Department at the U.S.-Japan-Australia Security and Defence Cooperation Forum, where senior government and military officials will discuss ongoing regional cooperation based on their longstanding security and defense relationships. The three nations will focus on ways to strengthen their mutual support for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region that fosters universal respect for international law, freedom of navigation and overflight, and sustainable development.

In Jakarta, DAS String will meet with Indonesian counterparts to discuss bilateral cooperation, U.S. security assistance programs, and regional issues of mutual interest. In these talks, DAS String will affirm our growing defense cooperation under the U.S.-Indonesia Strategic Partnership, which supports Indonesia’s defense modernization, as well as peacekeeping, maritime security, and humanitarian and disaster assistance response.
