In a message on the occasion of International Labour Day, which is being celebrated on Wednesday, the president of Angola wrote that “it is with your dedication and effort that we can keep the certainty of better days”.

He believes that united and vigilant it could guarantee the success of the current fight for transparency, legality and moralization of society and against corruption and impunity.

The president salutes all Angolan workers, o whom fall the huge task to overcome the difficulties derived from many years of destruction of the economic infrastructure of the country and to develop its enormous production potential, to give satisfaction to the great challenges in the varied domains of economic and social life, indispensable to the progress and well-being of the populations.

João Lourenço hopes that the Workers ' Day will serve to honor the memory of those who have fallen in defense of ideals and rights that give fair value and dignity to those who work.

He recalled that the ephemerid, which is being marked today, originated in the massacre in Chicago in the early days of May 1884, when the American police shot to kill unarmed demonstrators demanding eight-hours working day and better working conditions.

He added that inspired by this event, workers and trade unionists from all over the world, gathered in Paris in July 1889, and decided to proclaim May 1 as International Workers ' Day.

Since then, it reads in the note, the date has been celebrated by workers around the world, being banned or ignored by authoritarian regimes and anti-democratic, or consecrated as a national holiday in countries which recognize the legitimate rights of workers and working for the elevation of their standard of living and the improvement of their working conditions, as is the case of the Republic of Angola.
