House Democrats Vote to Condemn the Trump Administration’s Sabotage of Health Care, Reauthorize VAWA

Message from the MAJORITY LEADER

This week, House Democrats continued to take action on our For The People agenda. On Wednesday, the House passed a resolution introduced by Rep. Colin Allred (TX-32) to condemn the Trump Administration’s sabotage of the Affordable Care Act. While the Administration has endorsed dismantling the ACA, which would kick millions off their care and raise costs for millions more, Democrats are working to defend the law, protect individuals with pre-existing conditions, and make quality health coverage more affordable for Americans. In addition to passing this resolution, the Energy and Commerce Committee marked up several bills to address health care and prescription drug costs. House Democrats will continue to defend the ACA and its protections as well as take steps to lower health care costs.

The House also passed the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization of 2019 introduced by Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) to prevent domestic violence, assist survivors, and support law enforcement. The bill is a five-year reauthorization of VAWA and improves current law by expanding existing grants that make communities safer and protect vulnerable populations, including Native American women. I’m proud VAWA once again passed in a bipartisan manner, and I urge Senator McConnell to take up this legislation, pass it, and send it to the President for signature as soon as possible.

Finally, the House passed a resolution yesterday concerning U.S. involvement in the conflict in Yemen and how to promote an end to a humanitarian crisis that threatens the lives of 22 million people. Now that the resolution has passed by the House and Senate, I urge the President to sign it into law and engage with Congress on how to bring an end to the violence and humanitarian disaster in Yemen.
