Acting Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Charles E. Summers Jr. provided the following readout: 

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick M. Shanahan met with Brazil’s Minister of Defense Fernando Azevedo e Silva at the Pentagon today to reaffirm the historical and strong bilateral defense relationship between Brazil and the United States. Also in attendance was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr.

The leaders discussed a broad range of defense and security issues, including a framework to implement Brazil’s recent designation as a Major Non-NATO Ally.  

Secretary Shanahan and Fernando Azevedo e Silva discussed increasing cooperation in the space and cyber domains, leveraging the State Partnership Program between Brazil and the New York National Guard, and sharing information about regional threats to security. Secretary Shanahan reaffirmed our commitment to ongoing security cooperation for peace and stability in the region.
