Hoyer Statement on the Trump Administration's Ban on Transgender Americans Serving in the Military

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Trump Administration announced last night that their ban on transgender Americans serving in the military would go into effect on April 12:

“Last night’s announcement is a betrayal of the thousands of transgender patriots who have served or have been preparing to serve our country in uniform. It is a betrayal of our values as a nation and the principles for which so many have given their lives at war. The Trump Administration’s transgender ban also betrays the thinly veiled bigotry of those who insisted, against the advice of military leaders, on instituting it. This policy risks weakening our military by denying it talented and driven recruits, and it denigrates the service of those who are now being forced out because of their gender identity and expression. This deeply harmful decision undermines our national security and puts our country at risk, and Congress ought to examine how this decision was made.”
