Angola and EU sign new conventions

Luanda, ANGOLA, March 12 - Angola and the European Union (EU) signed Monday in Luanda three new financing agreements worth 22 million Euros to support for the sectors of higher education, economic governance and dialogue facilities between the parties.,

The conventions fall within the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) and were signed on the sidelines of the 4th EU-Angola Joint Way Forward Ministerial Meeting, held in Luanda.

Were signatory of the conventions minister of Economy and Planning Pedro Luís da Fonseca, for Angola. Whereas the interim director for Central and Southern Africa Francisca Di Mauro represented the EU.

The support scheme for Higher Education is estimated at 13 million Euros and is expected to be implemented in five years period.

The initiative aims to support the subsystem (Higher Education), innovation and encourage skills.

The objective is to fostering employment and diversifying the economy of Angola.

The second convention entails support for Economic Governance, with focus on budget transparency, the effectiveness of public expenditure and the creation of an effective system to combat illicit financial flows.

The five-million Euro second convention will be implemented in three years by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.  

The final understanding is a Facilitation Programme for the EU-Angola Dialogue worth Euros 4 million.

Di Mauro highlighted the agreement on higher education, saying that the move will help support postgraduate specialty in key sectors of the economy.

 Angolan government is committed to the scientific research and increasing the quality of domestic production, aimed at ensuring  exports.
