WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined MSNBC’s “MSNBC Live” this afternoon to discuss H.R. 1, the For The People Act.  Below are excerpts from the interview and a link to the video:   "[Senator McConnell refusing to bring up the bill is] a shame because what this bill is designed to do is to make campaign finance for the people and not for special interests. The fact of the matter is that disclosure was an argument that Senator [Mitch] McConnell and [Former Representative] Tom DeLay used many years ago when we considered the McCain-Feingold Bill, and said that 'you don't need limits on spending, all you need is disclosure.’ It's ironic that now their view is, 'you don't need disclosure.’ The public should have a right to know who's paying for these ads I'm listening to that tell me to vote this way or that way or the other way. They need to consider the source, as my mother used to tell me, 'consider the source.' That's what this bill is about."

"Also, you didn't mention but a very important component of the bill is redistricting reform so that all over the country redistricting… will be done on a fair non-partisan basis. I think that's good for the country, and that is a very important part of this bill."

"We also have ethics reform in here, and as you mentioned, we'll have the President and the Vice President disclose tax returns. Why? Because the president is the only person in Washington who can act individually. The Congress has to act collectively, so there's a check and balance there, but the president can act individually. And people need to know what his interests are to make sure that he's acting in their interest, not his personal interest."

"This is a very, very important bill, I think, to open up government, make it more transparent, make it more honest, give citizens a greater confidence that the government is acting for the people – for them and not for others."
