Hoyer Statement on the Introduction of the Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37) introduced bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act:

“I thank Rep. Bass for introducing legislation today to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.  This is something that should have been done last year, and it is a major priority for the Democratic-led House in the 116th Congress.  We must meet our obligation to help stamp out domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and sexual harassment and provide victims and survivors with the resources to recover and seek justice.   “I was proud to be a cosponsor of the original Violence Against Women Act in 1994 and help lead efforts to enact an inclusive VAWA reauthorization in 2013. I will continue to be a strong supporter of this legislation as we work to update it for 2019.  Once the Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Nadler, has completed its markup, I look forward to bringing it to the House Floor for a vote during the first week of April.”
