Attorney General dismisses "witch hunt" allegations

Luanda, ANGOLA, February 23 - Angola’s Attorney General has denied the existence in Angola of a selective process of investigation against political figures. ,

The remarks came during an interview the National Director of Prevention and Fight against Corruption, Inocência Pinto, granted Thursday to Angop in Luanda on allegations of witch-hunting distinguished political personalities.

 

Inocência Pinto told Angop that the cases investigated by this body have nothing to do with political issues, but they run in accordance with the Law.

 

She described as groundless the stories provided through media on investigations targeting particular political figures, which intensified in recent times.

 

The official clarified that the PGR receives complaints every day, stressing that no matter who brings the tipoff to help carry out the investigation.

 

"Investigation starts as soon as the institution takes notice of the facts, aimed at ascertaining the existence of facts that may eventually constitute a criminal offense," she said.

 

 

Inocência Pinto stated that the Public Prosecutor's Office is a body tasked with the defending the legality and, therefore, performs accordingly with the Law.

 

As for PGR's readiness to lead the anti-corruption process, she said that the institution is not only in a position to do so, but has already done so.

Angolan government’s priorities include strict crackdown on impunity, nepotism and flattery, considered the practice that undermine the Angolan society.
