Hoyer Statement on Mulvaney's Shutdown Comments

WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on White House Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney's comments that a government shutdown is "still on the table":

“Acting Chief of Staff Mulvaney’s comments this morning were irresponsible and alarming. Instead of threatening another unnecessary and dangerous government shutdown, the Trump Administration ought to reassure federal employees, their families, and the millions of Americans they serve that another shutdown is off the table. For thirty-five days, President Trump shut down the government to bully Congress into giving him a border wall that Democrats and Republicans alike oppose. I just came back from the visiting border this weekend and can attest that what we need is not a medieval wall but twenty-first century technology, port infrastructure, additional trained personnel, and humanitarian assistance. House Democrats will continue to oppose funding for a costly and unnecessary wall that does not make us safer or address the humanitarian challenges on our border.”
