Angolan and US officials meet in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, February 11 - Angolan Foreign minister Manuel Augusto held a meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Southern Africa, Matt Harrington, at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa on Sunday, with whom he addressed issues of common interest.,

The meeting aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries and both officials expressed interest in increasing US investment in Angola, but outside the oil sector.

They also discussed security and stability issues in the SADC sub region.

The US Deputy Secretary of State reinforced the US interest in continuing to work with Angola in the strategic partnership programme.

In addition to the meeting with the American official, the Angolan minister attended a meeting at one of the hotels in Addis Ababa with Rwanda President,  Paul Kagame and other African leaders.

Manuel Augusto is participating in the 32nd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), representing the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.

The 32nd summit was opened on Sunday by the new chairman of the African Union, Egyptian Head of State Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, who succeeds the  Rwandese President Paul Kagame.

The solemn opening ceremony was attended by three special guests, namely  Microsoft founder Bill Gates, FIFA President Gianni Infantino and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom.

 

After the family photo, it was inaugurated the statue of the former Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie.

The event also had the usual presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud-Abbas.

This year's summit is paying special attention to the theme: "Year of refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons: Towards durable solutions for forced displacement in Africa."

The meeting of African leaders is being marked by the analysis of the most important issues of the day, such as the implementation of the decision of the reform of the organization, the elections held in 2018 on the continent, regional integration, the situation of peace and security, the humanitarian situation and the analysis of the 2019 budget.

At the meeting, Rwanda President Paul Kagame, who ceased his duties as the leader of the continental organization, presented a report on the reform process underway at the institution as a result of the 11th Special Session of the Summit of Heads of State on Reforms, held on 17-18 November 2018.

The chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, presented a report on the situation of peace and security in Africa and the actions undertaken by the organization related to the matter in 2018.

The crisis situation on the continent, particularly in countries such as DR Congo, CAR, Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Burundi, Somalia, and updated information on the implementation of the master roadmap to silence arms by 2020, as well as the electoral processes carried out in 2018 in DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Sao Tome and Principe, were also part of the peace and security report.

The Summit is also addressing the issue of combating terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.
