Luanda, ANGOLA, February 5 - President of Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi Tuesday in Luanda considered legitimate Angola's commitment to protect its wealth from being exploited by illegal foreigners.,

Felix Tshisekedi said so at a joint press conference with the Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, in the light of a few-hour visit to Angola aimed at assessing the cooperation between the two countries.

Angola launched, since last September 25, a crackdown on illegal diamond exploration, dubbed Transparent Operation.

As result some 380,000 migrants left the country voluntarily, mostly from the DRC.

 

"I want more collaboration with the Migration and Foreigners Service (SME) of Angola so that the expulsions be carried out in cooperation with the DRC authorities," said the Congolese leader.

 

The DRC leader defended a prior notice by Angola so that his country could prepare the conditions to accommodate its citizens in the Congolese territory.

Mixed Commission

 

President Felix Tshisekedi announced for the first quarter of this year the holding of the next session of the Angola-DRC Joint Commission in Congolese capital Kinshasa.

The Joint Commission meeting between the two countries was initially scheduled for February 2018, but did not happen.

The President of DRC described Angola’s support as fundamental for the stability in his country. "We want to cooperate in all projects and domains," said Felix Tshisekedi, who chose Angola as the first country to visit after his inauguration.

He said that he invited the Angolan Head of State to attend the funeral of the former Congolese opposition leader, Etienne Tshisekedi, who died in February 2018 in Brussels, Belgium, where his remains are based.

As for the elections he won with 38.57 percent of the votes, the DRC Head of State recognised the imperfections, adding that minor glitches do not tarnish the outcome of the polls.

“We were declared winners before the world and no one proved otherwise," he said.

 

Tshisekedi pointed out ensuring the process of national reconciliation, combat tribalism and promote unity as top priority of his mandate. He also hope to equip the armed forces with the means to ensure peace in the country.

 

He pledged to meet with the heads of State from neighbouring countries to eliminate the hotbeds of conflict, with a view to achieving peace in the Great Lakes Region.

He said there was still no agreement with the different political forces, but gave indications of being close to an alliance with the outgoing president's party.

Data released by National Statistics Institute (INE) in the third quarter of 2017, show that the DRC was the second largest destination of Angola's exports in trade among Africans behind South Africa, with a total of 4.4 billion kwanzas .
