SADC salutes DR Congo's president-elect
Luanda, ANGOLA, January 21 - The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) last Sunday congratulated Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, on winning the presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).,
Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo last Sunday was confirmed by the Constitutional Court winner of the December 30 presidential election in the DR Congo.
Mr Tshisekedi received 38.57% of the votes, while the second placed, Martin Fayulu, got 34.83% , followed by Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, the outgoing government’s candidate.
The announcement of the definitive results by the Constitutional Court happens a few days after the African Union requested to the Congolese authorities to suspend the publication of the election results, since they were doubts about the transparency of the electoral tally.
The African Union had programmed the sending of a delegation to DR Congo with a view to holding an emergency meeting this week.
Meanwhile, SADC has issued a message congratulating the Congolese people, its politicians and other civil society players in the central African country on holding peaceful elections, despite the difficulties faced in terms of security and logistics.
The regional organisation appeals to all political players and the civil society in DR Congo to support the president-elect and the government to maintain unity, peace and stability, as well as to achieve economic development.
SADC expects a peaceful transfer of power and reiterates the need for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DR Congo.
On the message, SADC pledges to support the new Congolese government, in line with the treaty and co-operation agreement in the areas of politics, defence and security.
