Hoyer Statement on Democrats' Legislation to Reopen Government and End the Trump Shutdown
“On Thursday, when Democrats assume control of the House, I will be bringing two bills to the Floor aimed at ending President Trump’s costly and dangerous shutdown. The first will be a package with six of the seven remaining appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2019, and the second will be a continuing resolution to fund the Department of Homeland Security at current levels through February 8. Each of these will be identical to measures that unanimously passed the Senate Appropriations Committee during the last session of the 115th Congress, four of which passed the full Senate as a package that received 92 votes in favor, with the addition of a measure to ensure back pay for federal workers furloughed because of the Trump shutdown.
“It is time to end this unnecessary shutdown and put the federal government fully back to work serving the American people. I thank Chairwoman Lowey of the Appropriations Committee and Chairman McGovern of the Rules Committee for their leadership in bringing these bills forward. I hope the Senate will act swiftly and approve theses measures with the same strong support it did before. I urge the President to sign these bills without delay.”
