High-strength pipes for 150 atm pressure to be designed by Severstal for Gazprom

Release

Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, and Alexey Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal, today signed in Moscow a Technology Roadmap to launch the production of large-diameter pipes (LDPs) of K80 strength class.

It is planned that by 2023 Severstal will become the first company in Russia to design and start producing electric-welded longitudinal steel LDPs and fittings for the needs of Gazprom. The products will have increased strength (K80 class) and will withstand pressures of up to 14.8 MPa (150 atm), a world record for onshore gas pipelines.

The innovative pipe products are meant to help cut the costs of gas pipeline construction and operation. This will be achieved through, inter alia, reducing metal consumption thanks to thinner pipe walls and building fewer compressor stations.

Background

In October 2016, Gazprom signed the updated scientific and technical cooperation programs until 2021 with Russia's leading pipe producers, including Severstal.

Currently, the maximum operating pressure for onshore gas pipelines in Russia is 11.8 MPa (120 atm), which is the working pressure of the Bovanenkovo – Ukhta and Bovanenkovo – Ukhta 2 gas pipelines.
