ISWA World Congress 2018 in Kuala Lumpur

World Meet for Knowledge Transfer on Sustainable Consumption & Waste Management

KUALA LUMPUR , SELANGOR, MALAYSIA, September 13, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The 28th International Solid Waste Association World Congress which will be held for the first time in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 22nd - 24th October 2018

Heralded as the industry’s premier event, the ISWA World Congress is where professionals meet to exchange ideas and opinions to advance scientific and technical knowledge for sustainable solid waste management. The three-day event is expected to attract over 1,000 delegates from across the globe.

Solid waste management, a fundamental infrastructure, is a growing global concern for both developed and developing countries due to its impact on public health systems and the environment. Estimates by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) indicate global waste generation accounts for between 7-10 billion tonnes annually1.
The ISWA World Congress 2018 theme, Sustainable Consumption towards Waste Minimization, is focused on driving strategic change and technological innovation toward sustainable consumption solutions whilst reducing our ecological footprint and conserving the earth’s natural resources.

“Rapid urbanization and increasing global consumerism are driving unprecedented levels of waste generation. This rising tide represents an increasing environmental, social and economic burden. It’s time to look to a circular economy model with a focus on regeneration, restoration and reintroducing products into the value chain as opposed to a bin and bury approach” remarked Mr. Ho De Leong, Chairman, of the Waste Management Association of Malaysia (WMAM).

He continued, “We are thrilled to be hosting the ISWA World Congress 2018. The event will provide Malaysia a platform in which to showcase its progress in waste management. As we strive to become a high-income nation, our need to create an effective, economically viable and environmentally sound solid waste management system that supports the country’s development is paramount. By sharing our best practices and inviting other nations to share their own, we hope to leave a legacy.”

The ISWA World Congress 2018 will feature a comprehensive scientific programme highlighting the socio-economic impacts of waste recycling, waste reduction, and health, safety and policy regulation pertaining to recycling and climate change. It will also include areas of current interest such as the new plastic economy, marine and coastal waste management. The scientific programme will culminate with a forum that will see key ASEAN ministers responsible for the solid waste management, participate in a dialogue to re-evaluate waste management policy and practices within the region.

Since its inception in 1990, the ISWA Congress annually attracts researchers, scientists, young professionals, and policymakers from around the world to network and exchange scientific and technical data policies and case studies on a wide range of solid waste management issues., The Congress offers a critical platform to bring about positive action and cutting-edge innovation toward sustainable solid waste management with a think global, act local approach.
