South Africa: BRICS seeking global solutions

Johannesburg - The adoption of a joint declaration by the Heads of State and Government of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa marked last Thursday the second day of the 10th BRICS Summit. ,

 

With more than 100 points, the document stressed the importance of the event and the figure of former South African President Nelson Mandela, mainly his values, principles and dedication to humanity.

 

The participants also praised the achievements of the BRICS over the last ten years.

 

This is result of a strong demonstration of cooperation for the attainment of shared peace, harmony, development and prosperity.

 

The BRICS leaders reaffirmed commitment to the principles of mutual respect, sovereign equality, democracy, inclusion and strengthened collaboration.

 

The members also pledged to further improve the strategic partnership for the benefit of their respective peoples through the promotion of peace, a fairer international order, sustainable development and inclusive growth.

 

They reiterated commitment to peace and stability, supporting the central role of the United Nations, the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter and respect for international law.

 

During the meeting, held behind close door, the participants discussed matters related to multilateralism, peace, world security and the 4th industrial revolution.

 

To improve the interests of the group, the BRICS signed three Memoranda of Understanding -providing for partnerships for the development of aviation, the cooperation in environmental matters and the opening of an office of the New Development Bank in São Paulo, Brazil.

 

Like the opening day of the Summit (25), the issue of increased protectionism in trade relations, as encouraged by US, was once again on the table, with Chinese President, Xin Jinping, reiterating the need for the search of peaceful solutions.

 

At stake is the measure of the US government to create import duties for various products, such as steel and aluminum, that deserved retaliation from China.

 

On the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, the Angolan head of state João Lourenço discussed with Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, the issues related to strengthening of cooperation.
