World marks Nelson Mandela International Day
Luanda, ANGOLA, July 18 - The world is celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day on Wednesday, 18th July. ,
The date was instituted in November 2009 by the UN General Assembly in recognition of his contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
At least 192 member States reached a consensus on celebration, started from 2010 of Nelson Mandela International Day.
The date falls on the anniversary of the black leader who in 1993 shared the Nobel Peace Prize with his South- African fellow citizen, Frederik de Klerk.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the Madiba clan in the village of Mvezo, in the Eastern Cape, on 18 July 1918.
He stood out in his commitment to resolution to conflicts, freedom in the world and the promotion of good relations among ethnic groups.
On 10 May 1994, he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President.
