Eversley Wins Again In Portland, Extends Points Lead

  • Ryan Eversley scores season's third win for Honda Civic Type R
  • Eversley widens World Challenge Touring Car R series points lead with victory
  • Honda Civic Si driver Tom O'Gorman also extends his points lead with a double podium

PORTLAND, Ore. – RealTime Racing driver Ryan Eversley fought back after a heartbreaking Saturday race in Portland to claim his third win of the season in the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car R series in Sunday's weekend finale at Portland International Raceway.

Eversley was joined by a former World Challenge GT class rival in the Honda Civic Type R this weekend as Michael Cooper took over the #44 RealTime machine, and giving that car its best weekend of the season with third- and fourth-place finishes.

Meanwhile, Honda driver Tom O'Gorman continued to show the way in the TCA class standings in his RealTime Racing Honda Civic Si, taking double podium finishes in the weekend's two races for the second consecutive event.

TCR Eversley stormed to the pole in his RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type R in qualifying and had things well in hand throughout most of Saturday's opening event until contact with lapped traffic played a part in allowing the twin Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundais of Mark Wilkins and Michael Lewis to slip by and demote Eversley to third place on the final lap.

Eversley started third in Sunday's second race of the weekend, but took advantage of an early problem for Wilkins and stormed to the lead on the first lap. Things weren't easy for the Georgian as he had to fight off Lewis throughout the whole event, besting him by just 0.612 seconds to earn his third victory of the year in Sunday's 40-minute race. His victory, partnered with Wilkins' misfortune, allowed Eversley to widen his gap in the Drivers' Championship with four races remaining in the 2018 season.

Cooper made his debut in the Honda Civic Type R this weekend, finishing a strong fourth on Saturday, then rounded out the podium with a third-place finish on Sunday.

TCA In the TCA class, 2017 TCB class champion Tom O'Gorman extended his points lead, widening the gap held by his Honda Civic Si atop the points with second- and third-place finishes. O'Gorman chased Jeff Sexton's Subaru BRZ tS to second place in Saturday's opener, and then took another podium on Sunday to increase his lead over Eric Powell.

Unlike the TCR Honda Civic Type R, where many racing components are incorporated with the production engine and chassis, World Challenge TC technical regulations require the car to be very close to the production version, with only minor safety and suspension changes allowed.

Quotes: Ryan Eversley (driver, #43 RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type R) 3rd in TCR Round 7; wins Round 8: [On the Round 8 win] "I feel badly for Mark [Wilkins], as I was driving by for the start of the race. But it was a big break for us in the TCR title hunt. The RealTime Racing guys did a great job setting up the car for this track.  The Honda Civic Type-R is a strong, solid car and we had to fight off Michael [Lewis] for the win.  He tried to make a move a couple of times, but the Type R was outstanding. I'm pleased with the performance this weekend, leading most of Saturday's race and winning Sunday. It's fun to drive these TCR cars. And these cars are the closest to what are in our parking lot this weekend. I think we put on some really good racing for the fans, too.  Now, we'll move to Utah for another strong weekend."

Michael Cooper (driver, #44 RealTime Racing Honda Civic Type R) 4th in TCR Round 7, 3rd in Round 8: "I'm pretty happy with a podium. The four drivers that are running at the front of that series, and even some of the privateers behind them, are super strong and know those cars really well. I remember when I was running touring cars like that, it's tough for someone to come in and be on pace with the guys that are racing every weekend. I'm really happy to get a podium my first go at it."
