Front Row Starts for Acura in Detroit
- Juan Pablo Montoya qualifies Acura ARX-05 prototype second overall
- Katherine Legge's run places her Acura NSX GT3 second in the GTD class
- Acura of Helio Castroneves qualifies third in prototype, Justin Marks third in GTD
The four Acura entries in this weekend's Detroit Grand Prix Presented by Lear will start second and third in their respective classes after strong qualifying runs today in preparation for Saturday's IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round on the streets of Belle Isle Park.
Acura Team Penske Prototype Acura Team Penske's Juan Pablo Montoya qualified his #6 Acura ARX-05 on the front row for the second time this season with a time of 1:22.790 around the bumpy 2.35-mile temporary street circuit, just over a half-second off the pole time set by Pipo Derani.
Previously, Montoya started from the pole at the Grand Prix of Long Beach in April, and co-driver Dane Cameron also qualified the #6 Acura on the front row last month at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Mid-Ohio pole qualifier and race winner Helio Castoneves slotted his #7 ARX-05 into third on the starting grid, and will again share his Acura with Ricky Taylor in Saturday's 100-minute contest, shortest on the IMSA schedule.
Meyer Shank Racing GTD In GTD, Katherine Legge again paced the Acura effort, taking her NSX GT3 to second in the 12-minute session for that category following a tight qualifying battle among the top six competitors. Legge will start tomorrow's race in the #86 MSR Acura before handing off to co-driver Mario Farnbacher.
In the second MSR entry, Justin Marks produced his best qualifying performance of 2018, and will start the #93 NSX GT3 he shares with Lawson Aschenbach from third in the competitive, 12-car GTD field.
Quotes Juan Pablo Montoya (driver, #6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05) qualified second: "I'm very disappointed with second. I think we had the car to be on pole. But I was trying too hard to get all of [the speed] out of the car. I made too many mistakes on both of my fastest laps. It's a shame, because our pace was unbelievably good, I just didn't do a good enough job with it."
Katherine Legge (driver, #86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3) qualified second in GT "Second is a great spot to start, since we are second in the championship. I made a small mistake on my second flyer [qualifying lap], but I don't think that cost us anything. We won here last year from second, so I think we are in a good spot. I have my teammate, Mario [Farnbacher] with me who is doing an awesome job. We will see what tomorrow brings."
