Stability in SADC region deemed priority

Luanda, ANGOLA, April 29 - The Republic of Angola, in its role as chair of the SADC’s Political, Defence and Security Organ, must do all it can, together with the member states, to find the best solutions for stability in the southern African region, said last Saturday in Luanda the university lecturer, Osvaldo Mboco. ,

The university lecturer spoke to ANGOP in the ambit of the Extraordinary Summit of the SADC Double Troika held last week, in Luanda, to analyse the political situation in DR Congo and Lesotho, as well as the consolidation of the democratic process in southern Africa.

On a brief interview, the academic said that in the research for peace in the region, Angola does not appeal for the use of violent means, but seeks peaceful forms - such as dialogue, negotiations and consensus – to solve the problem causing instability.

“The resolution of such problems, to a certain extent, depends on the willingness of the internal players of the country in question, as well as on the concerted actions among the neighbouring states (...)”, he explained.

He went on to say that instability makes borders vulnerable to international criminality, which can threaten the sovereignty of states, as well as causes constraints to the economic relations between states and foreign investment, thus blocking regional development.

Last week’s regional gathering was co-presided over by the acting chairman of SADC, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the chairman of the SADC Political, Defence and Security Co-operation Organ, President João Lourenço.

The event was also attended by the Congolese Head of State, Joseph Kabila, the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Thomas Thabane, and the Executive Secretary of SADC, Stergomena Lawrence Tax.

The Defence and Security Co-operation Organ is made up by Angola (chair), Zambia and Tanzania, whereas the SADC Troika comprises South Africa, Swaziland and Namibia.
