FNLA party defends better pension for former combatants

Luanda, ANGOLA, March 2 - The opposition National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) last Thursday, in Luanda, asked the head of the Angolan Executive, João Lourenço, to revise the amount of the monthly state pension provided to former combatants.,

This request was made by the president of the FNLA, Lucas Ngonda, at an audience with President João Lourenço, which served to discuss the present situation of former combatants, as well as aspects relating to that historical party’s war veterans.

Speaking to journalists, in the end of the audience, Lucas Ngonda stressed that the amount that former combatants get as state pension is not sufficient to cover their basic needs.

He said pensioners get about 23,000 Kwanzas (roughly USD 100) per month).

Lucas Ngonda also revealed that the FNLA has in its records about 27,180 people registered as former combatants.

Founded in 1954, the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA) is one of the three main Angolan liberation movements (actually the first one to get organised and engage in the struggle) that fought against the Portuguese colonial domination, thus making a substantial contribution to the achievement of national independence on 11 November 1975.

In the present legislature the FNLA only has one parliamentary seat, following last August 23 general elections.
