Angola at SADC-UN meeting

New York, ANGOLA, February 14 - Angola is attending Wednesday in New York the 2nd engagement meeting gathering SADC and the United Nations to review the operational capacity of the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). ,

 

The information was released by the Press Office of the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations in New York.

 

The Chief of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda, is leading the Angolan delegation in United States.

 

The meeting will analyse the compliance with the recommendations emerged from the engagement meeting held on July 10, 2017 in New York.

 

The meeting focused on improvement of the operational capabilities of this brigade to ensure stability in the eastern region of the DRC and peace throughout the country.

 

The UN Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) is a military formation which constitutes part of the UN Stabilisation Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) made up of troops from three Southern African Development Community (SADC) Member States, namely, South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.

 

In addition to Angola - Chair of SADC Political, Defence and Security Cooperation Body - the meeting will gather Double Troika of the Sub-regional Organisation (South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Swaziland).

 

Joining the meeting are Troop Contributing Countries to MONUSCO- (South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania) with the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

 

The meeting will seek ways to improve the consultation between MONUSCO and the FIB to ensure better performance in operational role to neutralise negative forces in the DRC, ahead of elections scheduled for December of this year.

 

Prior to the engagement meeting, the Double Troika and the Troop Contributing Countries to MONUSCO-FIB held Tuesday a coordination meeting with the SADC Secretariat at the Permanent Mission of Angola to the UN.

 

The meeting was presided over by South Africa, in its capacity as president of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC), co-chaired by Angola.
