Armed forces must become self-sufficient - president's aide

Luanda, ANGOLA, February 6 - Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) must become self-sufficient and contribute, in time of peace, to the economic and social development of the nation, said the minister of State and Head of Security Affairs of President of Republic. ,

Pedro Sebastião was speaking Tuesday at the opening meeting of FAA, convened to take stock of the last year’s activity and discuss the programme for 2018.

The President's Aide spoke of the possibility of FAA to become self-sufficient in supplying their main needs.

He referred to logistics in terms of food production, through well-designed agro-livestock projects, aimed, in the first instance, at self-consumption.

The official said that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces has provided means to make them self-reliant in some areas.

He added the initiative is meant to contribute to saving foreign exchange, diversifying the economy and creating jobs.

The minister also defended initiatives that could improve the operational capacity of the FAA and develop a defence industry, contributing to the improvement of military capability.

Addressing a ceremony, the official said that the current economic and financial crisis requires strictness in management and execution of the budget.

He also said that it is up to the military leadership to play a decisive role in rational and effective organisation of use of resources.

The minister of State suggests the permanent cooperation in the southern region based on consultations, operational support, installation and joint operations.

The cooperation helps prevent conflicts, restoring and consolidation of peace or humanitarian operations, as the case of the current mission in Lesotho.

He also reaffirmed the commitment to protect the Gulf of Guinea against potential piracy and terrorism that pose a major threat to international security.

The Head of the Security affairs of President of the Republic asked the Social Security Fund of the Armed Forces for permanent adaptation of the conditions of assistance to retired officers and pensioners.

The participants at the meeting, set to end on Thursday, are discussing issues related to social conditions of staff, weapons as well as operational and combative preparedness of FAA.
