Bissau: MPLA at PAIGC Congress opening ceremony
Bissau, ANGOLA, February 2 - The ruling MPLA party witnessed the opening ceremony of IX Ordinary Congress of the African Party for Independence of Guinea and Cabo Verde (PAIGC), held Wednesday in Bissau.

The delegation of the Angola's largest party to the event was headed by Secretary of MPLA Politburo for International Relations, Julião Mateus Paulo "Dino Matross".
High-ranking militants such as Brito Sozinho and Maquento Sebastião Lopes also joined the Angolan delegation.
At least 1,233 elected delegates from different regions of that country and Diaspora attended the opening ceremony.
Also witnessed the ceremony PAICV (Cabo Verde), MLSTP (São Tomé), PSD and PCP (Portugal), UNIP (Zambia), Frelimo (Mozambique), SACP (South Africa), Polisario Front and International Socialist.
Diplomatic corps and international organisations accredited to Guinea Bissau also attended the opening ceremony going until February 4.
The IX Congress of the PAIGC is expected to elect the party leader.
Domingos Simões Pereira is running for his own succession.
