The United States ranks high on conflict, level of militarization, and risks from domestic and international conflict

Globally, the peace index declined by 0.5% in 2016, implying that more conflicts have taken place in comparison to the previous year. The regions, which showcased the maximum rise in conflicts include countries in the Middle-East and North Africa. North America was the fourth most peaceful region in 2016. Canada, with lower level of conflict as compared to the US and Mexico, was the most peaceful nation in the region.

Involvement of the US in the armed conflict against ISIL with several airstrikes in the Islamic State-held territory, drastically increased the score of international conflict against the country. Also relations with Russia deteriorated due to their support offered to the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad. The US ranked third in militarization, indicating its high capacity in terms of economic resources devoted towards military and support for various operations. In terms of societal safety and security, the US ranked 26th globally and 2nd regionally.

The total economic impact of violence to the world economy was US$13.6 trillion in 2015, which is equivalent to 13.3% of the world GDP. Around 70% of the total economic impact of conflict and violence accrues from military and internal security spending. Military spending counts for 45% whereas internal security contributes to 26% of the total costs incurred globally. Country wise, Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq incur the largest economic impacts in terms of percentage of their GDP. North America was the most affected region in terms of expenditure and economic impact of violence.
