Richard and Jane Spillman pledge $5 million to ensure high-level cancer care in Logan

LOGAN, UTAH, USA, November 28, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Intermountain Healthcare is pleased to announce a $5 million philanthropic gift that will ensure the highest level of cancer care in and around Logan. Richard and Jane Spillman contributed $5 million to Intermountain Foundation at Logan Regional Hospital to enhance the programmatic efforts at the Gossner Cancer Center.

The Hyrum, Utah, couple’s gift is an endowment that will fund oncology clinical support services in perpetuity, including several caregiver positions such as nurse navigators, a financial navigator, a dietitian, and a social worker. Each of these caregivers supports cancer patients and their families from the moment they are diagnosed, to help them navigate every detail of their treatment.

Having had family members treated for cancer, the Spillmans believe fervently that giving patients the best possible holistic support makes the journey easier while having a positive effect on outcomes. The Richard and Jane Spillman Supportive Care Program is the result of that passion.

“We were touched by the opportunity to provide services that will ease the burden families feel during these stressful times, when their priority should be caring for their family member,” the Spillmans stated. “We are pleased to share our family’s legacy in an area that means so much to us personally, and we hope this gift will enhance even further the wonderful cancer care available here.”

“The Spillman family has deep ties in our community. They are visionaries who are committed to helping others receive the best possible care,” Logan Regional Hospital Administrator Kyle Hansen said. “We are truly thankful for this transformational gift, which helps establish the highest level of supportive care services in the valley for cancer patients.”

The Spillmans’ gift follows a $2 million contribution made in March by Gossner Foods, Inc. Together, these gifts will help fund the upcoming 9,000-square-foot expansion of the Gossner Cancer Center, and support the skilled group of medical oncologists and other caregivers who care for patients. Construction is planned for 2018.

The family’s company, Spillman Technologies, was founded in Logan in 1982 as Spillman Data Systems. Founder Richard Spillman created a software package that public safety agencies could use to track 9-1-1 calls, map emergency situations, and trace dispatched units in real time, thus eliminating waste and increasing safety. Over time the company grew from three employees to 300, and moved to Salt Lake City. In 2016 the family sold the business to Motorola Solutions.
