Luanda, ANGOLA, November 17 - Angolan Foreign minister, Manuel Augusto, said Thursday that the staff and diplomatic personnel of the embassy in Zimbabwe, whose president is under house arrest, are well. ,

“There is no reason to worry about,” said the Angolan diplomat from Washington DC, where he is attending the Ministerial Conference on Trade, Investment and Good Governance.  

According to the Foreign minister, Angola is closely following the evolution of Zimbabwe’s situation, as the country chairs the Organ on Politics Defence and Security of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), of which both nations are members. 

 

He added that Angola is committed to firstly finding out what the situation in that Africa country really is, and then contribute to a solution that safeguards the functioning of the institutions, thus preventing power taking through unconstitutional means and avoiding violence.

Angola dispatched Thursday a delegation headed by the National Defence minister, Salviano Sequeira, to SADC  headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana. 

The Defence minister is participating in the Troika meeting (Angola, South Africa and Zambia), which is assessing the Zimbabwe issue and seeking means to help the country overcome the current crisis it has plunged into.

The Troika ministerial meeting is being chaired by South Africa in its capacity as SADC acting chair, says a  press note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that reached Angop on Thursday.

Members of the Zimbabwe armed forces put the local president Robert Mugabe under house arrest on Monday, took control of public institutions and arrested influential political figures.
