Gazprom Transgaz Saratov held a ceremonial meeting today to mark 50 years since the world’s first transcontinental Central Asia – Center (CAC) gas trunkline system had been put into operation. The main participants of the event were the gas industry veterans from Saratov, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Ufa, and Volgograd, who had been personally engaged in the construction and operation of the CAC system.
On the eve of the meeting, the guests together with representatives of the company’s youth association laid flowers to a stele at the memorial complex of Gazprom Transgaz Saratov and also got acquainted with documentary records pertaining to the history of that unique gas transmission system (GTS) at a photo exhibition arranged on the premises of the company.
The ceremonial event was opened by Leonid Chernoshchekov, Director General of Gazprom Transgaz Saratov, who told the audience about his personal work experience at the CAC facilities in Central Asia and emphasized a special role of the GTS construction and operation in the company’s evolution. “Half a century ago, gas from Central Asia arrived in the country’s central regions, changing the quality of life there. With the GTS commissioning, Saratov actually became a gas distribution center. Nowadays, Gazprom Transgaz Saratov is operating one of the most important sections of the Unified Gas Supply System of Russia and is securing reliable transmission of gas to the residential, social and industrial facilities,” said Leonid Chernoshchekov.
According to Vladimir Chumakov, labor veteran of the gas industry, the new gas transmission system stimulated scientific and technical progress, facilitated the development of sparsely-populated areas and contributed to the building up of a highly professional talent pool at gas industry companies. “We used state-of-the-art technologies during the construction process. This All-Union Komsomol project tasked a number of allied industries to design, create and apply powerful gas compressor units, large-diameter pipes, communications, telemechanics and other technical means, which certainly triggered the country’s scientific and industrial development,” noted Vladimir Chumakov.
In the course of the meeting, the CAC system veterans told Gazprom Transgaz Saratov employees about the years they had dedicated to the construction, paying special attention to the gas industry workers’ principles of social responsibility, which had gained momentum, taking on a new significance with the construction of the gas pipeline.
The event rounded off with the showing of a corporate documentary about the company’s ongoing progress and the presentation of a new book devoted to the GTS construction stages and the gas transmission professionals who had earned a great reputation among their colleagues and teammates for the hard work and commitment.

Gazprom Transgaz Saratov is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. The gas transmission system operated by the company provides for the regulation and redistribution of natural gas flows from Western Siberia, Central Asia, the Orenburg Region, and three UGS facilities located in the Saratov Region.
The company is in charge of over 7,000 kilometers of gas trunklines and branches, 29 compressor shops and 169 gas compressor units with a total capacity of 1.3 million kW. Its 215 gas distribution stations supply gas to around 4 million consumers in the Saratov Region and parts of the Tambov and Penza Regions. The company also operates six CNG filling stations.
Gazprom Transgaz Saratov adopted the ISO 14001 environmental management system and the OHSAS 18001:2007 occupational and industrial safety management system. The company employs around 6,000 people. It is headquartered in Saratov.
