Los Alamos – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office (EM-LA) has awarded a storage task order to Waste Control Specialists (WCS) in Andrews County, Texas for the continued storage of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) waste. The task order is valued at $19,263,668. The task order consists of a two-year base period with two option periods – one for a year and the other for 100 days.

DOE sent TRU/Greater Than Class C (GTCC) waste from LANL to WCS for temporary storage after the February 2014 salt truck fire and radiological release events caused the shutdown of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), which is the intended disposal facility for the LANL TRU/GTCC waste.

WCS operates a fully licensed 1,338-acre storage facility located on a 14,900-acre site in western Andrews County, Texas.

The DOE EM-LA mission is to safely, efficiently, and with full transparency complete the cleanup of legacy contamination and waste resulting from nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear research at LANL.
